My Disaster Assignments

Below is a summary of the disaster assignments I have been on over the past 20+ years. Some of these were National (DR) assignments, as part of the Red Cross DSHR system , others were "local" assignments but drew national attention. As I was fond of saying, 'Seeing some of the most exciting places at not such an exciting time.' I have also worked on local single family house fires and other local disasters.

  • May 1980 - Yakima, WA - Mt. St. Helen's Eruption  (communications)

  • August 1984 - Tonasket, WA - Barker Mountain Fire (Mass Care/Shelter Management, Family Services)

  • October 1994 - Houston, TX - Greater Houston Area Flood (DR-507) (Mass Care/Shelter Management, Family Services)

  • March 1995 - Central California Floods (DR -598) Emergency Response Vehicle Driver (ERV) (Mass Care)

  • September 1996 - West Virginia Floods (DR-203) (Hurricane Fran) - Mobile Vehicle Feeding Supervisor - Mass Care

  • November 1996 - Oregon Floods (DR-261)  Family Services Specialist

  • December 1996 - Oregon Flood 97 (DR-285) Family Services Supervisor/Mass Care Specialist

  • February 1998 - Central California Floods 2/98 Floods (DR-554) Mass Care Specialist

  • February 1998 - Costal California 2/98 Floods (DR-555) Mass Care Specialist

  • April 1998 - West Central Florida 3/8 Flood (DR -580) Family Services Specialist

  • June 1998 - Central Oregon 5/98 Flood (DR-640) Mass Care Specialist

  • February 1999 - Northern Louisiana 1/99 Flood Family Service Specialist

  • September 1999 - Hurricane Floyd 9/99 (DR-204) Mass Care Specialist

  • July 2000 - 07/00 Montana Wildfires (DR-427) Family Services Specialist

  • February 2001 - Washington 2001 Earthquake (DR-613) Mass Care Specialist -Coordinator/ Disaster Action Center (DAC) Liaison.

  • June 2001 - Tropical Storm Allison - Texas (DR-704) Family Services Specialist

  • August 2001 - Washington 08/01 Wildfires (DR-770) Mass Care Specialist - ERV Driver.

  • September 2001 - UA11/UA175 09/01 World Trade Center, New York City, New York - Mass Care Specialist.

Due to family commitments, I resigned from the DSHR in 2002 to care for my ailing wife.
